One of the reasons I like to seed my directories with listings at the start is one, I want to have content for the search engines to spider and two I want my directory to look like it is popular.
In marketing it is called social proof. People would rather be a part of something that they see others participating in, because if other people are doing it than it must worthwhile. If a person visits your directory and they see only a few listings they might be inclined to think your site isn’t that popular and move on.
If you read any marketing books you will hear marketers telling restaurant owners to have friends and family come in on opening night so it gives the impression to passersby that it’s a popular place. You’ve might have chosen a restaurant like this at some point. You’re in a new city and you’re hungry so you scope out the local restaurants and choose the one that looks the busiest because that’s a guarantee that the food is probably good.
Or you might hear a marketer tell a chiropractor that they should park a few cars in the parking lot of their business to give the impression that customers are inside and business is good. It’s the same thing with directories. You want your directory to look popular, look like others have paid for link submissions and generally look like there is a real human behind it and that it is a real business.
