They either link to your site from a blog post or a regular page and your link is linked from within a paragraph of text talking about you and your site.
Authority sites are ones that have been around awhile, have good Pagerank, are usually on a specific topic and have good rankings.
These are the best links you can get but also the hardest to get. If you want to jumpstart your links from say blogs you can always pay bloggers to post about your site.
