So if you have a directory on web design use the terms “web design, website design, web site design, web design directory, website directory, designers directory, LA web designer” etc. This looks more natural to search engines. Do not have every person link to your site with the text “web design”.
You should also vary the destination URL. People don’t always link to homepages. Try and get links to some of your main subcategories, your blog or forum. This looks more natural and will help boost the Pagerank to your subpages.
What link text you use to link to your homepage from within your directory counts. Don’t link to your homepage with the text ‘Home”. Link to it with the main keyword you are optimizing for. I usually do this in the footer.
Instead of linking to my homepage with generic text like “home” I use the main keyword I am optimizing my directory for. If it’s a blog directory I use the text “blog directory”, if it’s photographer directory I use the term “photographer” and so on. Google and other search engines count your own web pages as pages that link to you. You might have noticed this if you’ve ever checked your backlinks from the Google toolbar and seen your own site listed there.
One other thing… the homepage of your directory shouldn’t be the only place you link to your subcategories from. Grab the links to your subcategories and place them in the footer of your site. You can also place them in your left or right hand navbar. This passes Pagerank and helps search engine spiders follow all your pages. You should also have a sitemap that links to all your categories linked to from the footer or header of your directory.
If you have a lot of categories and linking to every single one from your other pages takes up too much room just link to the top categories. Indexu does this automatically now so you don’t have to worry about, but the important thing is to deep link to your subpages. This helps pass Pagerank and helps search engine spiders spider all your pages.
