A majority of the SEO industry thinks that link exchanges are dead but it’s not completely true. Link exchanges still work with directories, if your directory is based on a specific niche. That means your directory’s theme is built around a certain industry or topic, like photography or New York videographers. If you have a niche directory and you have a majority of your listed owners linking back to you it is ok and will actually boost your rankings.
You can require all webmasters who choose a free listing to link back to your directory by placing either a text link or graphic on their site. This is a common feature in most good directory scripts and allows you to receive backlinks for just listing someone else’s related site.
If the owner submitting their site doesn’t want to link back to your directory then you can require a payment be made, either a one-time payment or a reoccurring yearly or even monthly payment, although yearly is a more accepted length.
This helps promote webmasters linking back to you, thus increasing your sites Pagerank.
One type of directory I’ve had great success with people linking back to me is blog directories. Blog owners have a lot easier time adding a link to their sidebar because they can do it through their admin section. And one thing about blogs is that if you add a link to your sidebar it shows up on every single page so you’ll receive a lot more Pagerank that way. A lot of bloggers also like to post those 80×15 button graphics on their sites to show they are listed in popular blog directories.
