One is better than the other. I’d go about this slowly and do just a few to start, then keep an eye on your backlinks via Google or Yahoo.
Because Spam is much hated, you should use this technique carefully. You don’t want to piss anyone off. Used wisely you can get some very good backlinks by posting comments on blogs and by posting of forums.
First off, blog comments work the best. That’s if the blog owners don’t use the nofollow tag. You can easily tell if blog owners use the nofollow tag by using quirk.biz’s search status Firefox plugin. It will display a pink box around any link on a website that uses nofollow. This way you can quickly tell who uses it.
The nofollow tag was created by Google firstly to fight comment spam but it hasn’t worked because Yahoo and MSN were slow to adopt it. They’ve caught on somewhat so links with the nofollow tag applied don’t receive Pagerank, Trustrank or what have you.
You can however find blog owners who are fighting against the nofollow tag and practice dofollow which is just not using nofollow. That means when you comment on their blog your link will actually receive some pagerank and it will be followed by the search engines.
One trick is to search Google for “dofollow blogs“, “dofollow list”, “top commentators” or “top commenters” to find blogs who don’t use nofollow and also use the top commentators plugin which is growing with popularity every day
Blog Commenting Tips
Again, I hate spam and everyone does… So don’t go writing one sentence comments like “great post.” or “nice post, I like your blog.” Blog owners are smart and they know who’s just trying to get a link.
Take some time to read their blog and subscribe to their feed. When you post a comment its ok to use your directory’s URL but your name should be your actual name, not what your directory is about or what your main keyword is. Again doing that will get your commented deleted and your work will all be for naught.
Also, don’t post your URL in the comment box. Post a real comment that offers something of worth. Again you want to make it look like you’re a real reader who liked or disliked the post that you took the time to comment.
And only comment once on any given blog per week or better yet month. Don’t get greedy and post comments on every blog post. I’ve had this happen to me and it was obvious what they were trying to do. Needless to say their comments were deleted. If you comment diligently then this is a good way to get a few good links back to your site.
An interesting new site has emerged that allows you to search for blogs that don’t use the nofollow tag called Commenthunt.com. Be sure to test it out.
Comment on blog posts diligently. Do not use software to automate your commenting becuase it’s a surefire way to get your comments deleted fast.
Forum Posting Tips
You should join any forum you can find related to your niche and post like a normal user interested in the topic. Ask and answer questions like normal forum users do. Again, don’t post one sentence posts or start one sentence topics unless you want to get banned.
Most forum owners are savvy to people trying to get free links and require that you post a minimum amount of times. If it looks like you can put links in your signature then you should do the work to post the minimum amount of times required and again post diligently. Once you do after awhile you’ll have a nice amount of posts built up and you can post your directory links in your signature.
If your directory is related to the forum you are posting to you’ll have a lot of visitors wanting to be listed on your site. Use your signature like you would writing a Google Adwords ad. See it as a way to drive traffic to your site, not gain Pagerank.
Because the search engines can easily determine what sites are forums I’ve found this method of getting links to be not as effective as blog commenting.
